Frequently Asked Questions

How much does 1 gallon of epoxy cover?

It depends on solids content and film thickness. A 100% solids floor epoxy typically covers 140–200 ft² per gallon per coat (roughly 3.5–5 m² per liter). Thinner water-based or solvent-based products stretch further — often 250–300 ft² per gallon — because part of the wet film evaporates. Your product's technical data sheet lists the exact rate; enter it in the calculator using the Custom option.

How much epoxy do I need for a 2-car garage?

A typical two-car garage is 400–500 ft² (about 37–46 m²). At 150 ft² per gallon, two coats need roughly 5.5–7 gallons of mixed product — usually two 3-gallon kits. Enter your exact floor area and coverage rate above to get the precise figure for your job.

What does coverage rate mean?

Coverage rate (m²/L or ft²/gal) tells you how much area one liter or gallon of mixed product will cover at the specified film thickness. A thicker application reduces the coverage area.

Why does the calculator round up to full kits?

Epoxy is sold in pre-measured kits with a fixed A:B ratio. You cannot split a kit and maintain the correct mix ratio, so you must always purchase whole kits.

How accurate are the coverage rates?

Coverage rates are based on manufacturer specifications at the recommended film thickness. Actual yield varies with surface texture, application method, and ambient conditions. Confirm rates using the product data sheet (TDS) before ordering.

Should I apply one coat or two coats?

Two coats is standard for most residential and commercial epoxy floor systems. The first coat penetrates and bonds to the substrate; the second coat builds film thickness, improves coverage uniformity, and protects against pinholes or thin spots. One coat may be appropriate for primer applications or when the manufacturer's TDS specifically recommends it for a given substrate. For decorative systems with flake or metallic, the first coat is usually the base, so a clear topcoat brings the total to at least two.
