How the Metallic Epoxy Material Calculator Works

Frequently Asked Questions
What coverage rates should I use?
The defaults — 160 sqft per gallon for the base epoxy, 100 sqft per gallon for the metallic color coat, and 250 sqft per gallon for the clear top coat — are typical industry figures. Your actual rates depend on the specific products, film thickness, and substrate. The metallic color coat is applied as a full-bodied build coat so it spreads less far, while a thin clear seal coat covers much more area per gallon. Always confirm against each product's Technical Data Sheet (TDS) before ordering.
Does this include the metallic pigment?
No — this calculator sizes the liquid epoxy and seal coat by volume. Metallic pigment is added to the metallic coat at the loading rate on your product's data sheet (typically 50–100 g per liter of mixed epoxy), so once you know the metallic-coat gallons you can work out the powder separately. Many metallic epoxies also ship pre-pigmented, in which case no loose powder is needed.
Why does the calculator round up to whole kits?
Epoxy and seal coats are sold in pre-measured kits with a fixed mix ratio. You cannot split a kit and keep the correct Part A to Part B ratio, so the calculator always rounds up to make sure you have enough material to finish each layer.
Can I skip the base coat?
Yes — if you are using a separate primer or a self-priming metallic epoxy, set the base coat coverage high enough that it contributes little, or simply ignore the base coat result. Applying a solid base coat first does improve opacity and gives a more consistent final color, so most systems include one.
What if each coat uses a different kit size?
Set each layer's kit size independently on the right. Metallic systems often use a larger base-coat kit, a smaller metallic kit, and a separate seal-coat kit — enter the real pack size for each and the calculator rounds each layer to its own kit count.
