How is the margin calculated?

Margin is calculated as a percentage of the final quoted price, not a markup on cost. For example, a 35% margin on a $2,000 total cost gives a quoted price of $2,000 ÷ (1 − 0.35) = $3,077, leaving $1,077 profit which is 35% of $3,077. This is the standard way margins are expressed in business — make sure you're using margin, not markup, when discussing pricing with clients or accountants.

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price. Markup is profit as a percentage of the cost. A 35% margin and a 35% markup on the same job produce different results — margin gives a higher sell price. Use margin if you want to ensure a consistent share of every dollar you charge is profit.

What should I include in overheads?

Overheads cover costs that are real but not directly itemised — fuel and travel, equipment wear and maintenance, consumables like grinding diamonds and mixing sticks, insurance allocation, and any other business running costs you want to recover on the job. A flat percentage (typically 8–15% of labor and materials) is the quickest approach for most contractors.
