Identify Your Coating Defect

Why Is My Epoxy Still Soft, Gummy or Tacky?
Uncured epoxy is a chemistry problem, and the chemistry is decided before the material leaves the bucket. The pattern of the softness tells you which mistake it was: a whole floor that never hardened is a ratio error, patches in an otherwise sound floor are a mixing error, and a floor that is merely slow is usually just cold.
Hot Tire Pickup: Why the Coating Lifts Where You Park
Hot tire pickup is not a random failure, and where it happens is most of the diagnosis. A warm tire sitting still on a coating that could not resist it lifts the film in tire shaped patches while the rest of the bay stays perfect. The cause is almost always one of three: a product never rated for vehicle traffic, a floor driven on before it finished curing, or a bond to the slab that was marginal from the start.
Why Is My Clear Coat Cloudy or Milky?
Three unrelated problems produce the same milky finish, and they need three different repairs. Blush lies on top of the film and washes off with water. Micro foam is millions of tiny bubbles trapped inside it. Moisture comes up through the slab, and it will do it again. Work out which one you have before you touch the floor.
Intercoat Delamination: When One Coat Lets Go of Another
The underside of the flake settles this in about two seconds. Concrete on the back means the bond to the slab failed and you are on the wrong page. Coating on the back means the layers never bonded to each other, and that is almost always a recoat window that closed before anybody expected it to, or something invisible sitting on the surface when the next coat went down.
Roller and Lap Marks: Why the Floor Shows How It Was Rolled
Lap marks are a timing problem far more often than a skill problem. A coating flows together only while both passes are still wet, and the window for that is shorter than most people think, especially on a warm slab. Flake Bald Spots and Uneven Broadcast
A flake floor is the one system where the defect is usually something absent rather than something present, and that changes how you diagnose it. Thin patches are almost always a record of how the flake was thrown and how much time the base coat gave you, not of the material itself. Here is how to read the pattern and work out which.
Rough or Gritty Topcoat
A topcoat that feels like fine sandpaper is usually one of three things, and one test separates them: is the grit sitting on the film, cured into it, or is it the surface underneath showing through a coat that was too thin to bury it? The answer decides whether this is a wipe, a screen and recoat, or another full coat of material.
Wrinkling and Alligatoring
A wrinkled floor is a film that set at two different speeds. The surface skinned over while the material underneath was still moving, and the skin buckled rather than stretched. Nearly every case comes down to one of three things: the coat was too thick, the surface was heated far faster than the body, or it was recoated before the coat beneath it had finished.
Osmotic Blistering: When the Blisters Are Full of Liquid
Cut one open. If air escapes, you have a bubble and the problem happened while the floor was being laid. If liquid runs out, you have an osmotic blister, the slab is still wet, and the coating is being pushed off from underneath by a pressure that is not going to stop on its own. The two look identical and need completely different answers.
Streaking in Solid Color: Why the Shade Is Uneven
A streaked floor is usually a mixing failure wearing an application costume. The bands look like they came from the roller, so that is where people go looking, but the pigment was already unevenly distributed before any of it reached the floor. Knowing which of the two you have decides whether the fix is a technique change or a recoat.
Metallic Effect Failures: When the Pattern Is Wrong
Every other coating defect starts from the same assumption: the floor should be uniform and it is not. A metallic floor breaks that, because the unevenness is the product you sold. Polyaspartics are fast by design, which is most of why people buy them, so "it cured quickly" is not a fault on its own. The fault is when it cures faster than you can work, and the usual cause is not the product at all. It is the temperature of the slab you poured it onto, which compresses every stage of the cure at once.
