Roller and Lap Marks: Why the Floor Shows How It Was Rolled
Lap marks are a timing problem far more often than a skill problem. A coating flows together only while both passes are still wet, and the window for that is shorter than most people think, especially on a warm slab. Here is what causes the banding, how to tell it from the other texture faults, and what is worth doing about it.
A coating flows together only while both passes are still wet. Once the earlier pass has begun to gel, the join stays as a seam and stays there permanently, so a lap mark is a record of time rather than of skill. The working time you actually have is much shorter on a warm slab than the figure on the sheet suggests, which is why the same crew rolling the same way gets banding in July and not in November. The second cause, and the one that is still a problem after the floor looks finished, is spreading the material too far.
Three marks a roller leaves, and they are not the same problem
Lap marks
- Sharp seams where one pass met another, at the spacing of the passes
- Cause: the earlier pass gelled before you got back to it. A timing problem
- Most visible in raking light and from a low angle, often invisible looking straight down
- Cosmetic, because the film is still continuous and full thickness
Stipple
- Fine orange peel texture across the whole surface rather than in bands
- Cause: nap too long for the product, material already thickening, or over-working the coat after laying it
- A shorter nap and a single light laying off pass reduce it
- Cosmetic, and largely a matter of the finish the customer expected
Over-spread banding
- Broad patchy areas of differing sheen and colour depth rather than sharp stripes
- Cause: the material was stretched further than the specified rate
- The floor often looks blotchy rather than striped, and the substrate shows through more in places
- NOT cosmetic. Those areas are genuinely thinner film and will wear through sooner
Sorting which one you have is worth doing before anybody decides it does not matter, because two of the three are appearance and the third is durability wearing an appearance disguise.
Cause one: the wet edge closed before you got back
While two passes are both wet they flow into each other and level out, and the join disappears. That is all a wet edge is. Once the earlier pass has started to gel the new material can no longer merge with it, and the seam is permanent from that moment.
So the number that governs lap marks is not roller pressure or nap, it is how long the material stays workable, and that number moves a long way with temperature.
Pot life is the wet edge clock
Pot life is quoted at a reference temperature, and cure rate climbs steeply as it gets hotter. Enter the slab temperature you actually have and the tool scales it, so you can size each section around the working time you really get rather than the one printed on the tin.

The same material gives you 9.3 minutes on a 90F slab, because the reaction roughly doubles in rate for every 10 degrees Celsius. That is the whole explanation for a crew who have rolled the same way for years suddenly getting banding: nothing about the routine changed except the weather, and the size of area they could keep wet halved underneath them.
The correct response is to make the sections smaller, not to work faster. Working faster in practice means spreading the same material further, which trades a timing mark for a thickness problem, and that one does not polish out.
Cause two: the material was spread too far
Coverage figures are not advice, they are the rate at which a given product lands a given film. Go past that rate and there is simply less material on the floor: less to flow together across a seam, less to hide what is underneath, and less to wear through later.
A 100% solids product laid at 10 mil should be going down at 160.4 square feet per gallon. Stretch the same product to 200 square feet per gallon and the film you are actually laying is 8.0 mil, which is a fifth of the specified build gone. That shortfall shows up first as patchy sheen, then as early wear in the light areas, and by the time anybody notices the second one the floor is years old.
Measure the rate on the first section rather than the last. Mark off a known area, note what it took to coat it, and check the arithmetic before the habit is set for the whole floor. The solids by volume guide sets out why the figure on the tin is not the figure you get.
Cause three: the roller itself
- Wrong nap for the product. Longer nap holds more material and lays a thicker, more textured film; shorter nap lays a thinner, smoother one. Use what the data sheet specifies, because both are wrong if the sheet asks for the other
- A worn or shedding roller, which carries material unevenly across its length and lays bands at roller width that look exactly like a timing problem but are not
- Over-working the coat. Once material starts to gel, rolling it disturbs a film that is trying to level itself and leaves permanent texture. This is the most common way a small cosmetic problem becomes a large one, because the instinct when a floor looks uneven is to keep working it
- Laying off inconsistently. A final light pass with an unloaded roller, in one direction across the whole floor, evens out stipple. Alternating direction between sections leaves the sections visible
What can be fixed
Nothing that has cured can be rolled out, so the honest options are narrow. While the coat is genuinely wet, a light unloaded pass pulls a seam together and evens stipple, and that is what laying off is for. After that a roller makes it worse.
A floor that has already cured with marks in it is screened or lightly abraded across its whole area to knock the ridges down and take the gloss off uniformly, vacuumed thoroughly, and given a full topcoat. One fresh coat laid in a single continuous operation over a flat surface hides most timing marks.
Spot repairs do not work here. Abrading and coating only the marked bands leaves a patch that reads as clearly as the mark did, and usually more so once the sheen differs. If the cause was over-spreading, that extra coat is also bringing the floor up to the specified thickness, so work out the shortfall before ordering rather than buying enough for a cosmetic pass.
Preventing it on the next floor
- Size the sections around the material, not the room. Work out the real working time at the slab temperature you have, then choose sections a crew can lay and return to inside it
- Always work back into wet material. Keep one live edge and advance it rather than starting fresh anywhere convenient
- Have the next batch ready before the last is exhausted, because the pause while somebody mixes is exactly as long as the wet edge needs to close
- Put more people on a shorter edge on a wide floor, rather than asking fewer people to move faster
- Audit the spread rate on the first section with the film thickness calculator, and order enough material that nobody is tempted to stretch the last kit across the last bay
- Take the slab temperature, not the room temperature, and take it in the bay that gets the sun rather than the one by the door

What changes on site is that the size of area you can keep wet shrinks with it. A crew that has always worked in bays of a certain size finds the same routine suddenly produces banding, and nothing about the routine has changed except the weather.
The fix is to reduce the working area rather than to work faster, because working faster usually means spreading thinner, which causes a different mark.
Is it the roller nap?
Sometimes, and it is worth separating the two marks a roller makes because they have different fixes.
Stipple is the fine orange peel texture the roller leaves in the surface. It comes from nap that is too long for the product, from rolling material that is already thickening, or from working the coat too much after it has been laid. A shorter nap and a lighter final pass reduce it.
Banding at roller width is a different thing. That is either the wet edge problem above or a worn roller carrying material unevenly across its length, and no change of nap fixes the first of those.
As a rule, use the nap the product data sheet specifies. Longer nap holds more material and lays a thicker, more textured film; shorter nap lays a thinner, smoother one. Both are wrong if the sheet asks for the other.
Can I roll it out again if I catch it while it is still wet?
Only within the material working time, and re-rolling after that makes it worse rather than better.

How do I fix a floor that already has them?
Almost always by abrading and adding a coat, because there is no way to remove a mark that is cured into the film.

After that: keep a live edge and always work back into wet material rather than starting somewhere fresh, mix batches so the next one is ready before the last is exhausted, use the nap the sheet asks for, and lay off in one consistent direction. Where the floor is wide, more people working a shorter edge beats fewer people working faster.
And measure the spread rate on the first section rather than the last. Over-spreading to make a kit stretch is the second cause of banding, and it is the one that is still there after the floor is finished.
