Cold or falling temperature

  • Fix: keep the site above the product’s minimum cure temperature, and avoid coating into a falling-temperature evening

Curing near the dew point

  • If the substrate temperature is close to or below the dew point, moisture condenses directly onto the wet film
  • Fix: confirm the substrate is at least a few degrees above the dew point before coating

Poor air circulation

  • Stagnant, humid air sitting over the curing floor concentrates moisture right at the surface
  • Fix: ventilate the space, or run fans to keep air moving across the floor while it cures

Is it blush, or is it something else?

Amine blush

  • Lies flat. A waxy, greasy or soapy film sitting on the surface that you can feel and often wipe at
  • Does not follow the light, and is worst where the air was most humid or the floor cured slowest

Bubbling

  • Raised, not flat. Trapped gas that pushed up through the film and set that way, so it has height you can feel
  • Cannot be washed off, because it is the shape of the coating rather than something on top of it
  • Fix: see bubbling, which usually starts with a moisture test

Yellowing

  • A color shift rather than a haze, and the surface usually stays glossy
  • Follows the light. Worst near a window or an open door, fading into the shaded parts of the room
  • Fix: see yellowing. It cannot be cleaned off

Moisture coming through

  • Cloudiness that appears to be under the film rather than on it, sometimes with a white salty deposit at edges or cracks
  • Washing the surface changes nothing, because the problem is beneath the coating

Why warm water works and solvent does not

This is the one piece of chemistry on the page worth knowing, because it explains why the instinctive fix is the wrong one. Blush is what forms when the amine curing agent reaches the surface and reacts with water and carbon dioxide in the air instead of with the resin it was supposed to react with. The product of that reaction is a salt, and like most salts it dissolves in water.

So warm water and a mild detergent lift it. Solvent does not: it softens and spreads the film rather than dissolving it, which can leave you with a thinner blush over a wider area and a surface that now also has solvent residue on it. Reaching for a stronger chemical is the natural move here and it makes the problem harder to see rather than smaller.

Abrasion has the same trap in a different form. Sanding a blushed floor before washing it grinds a water soluble contaminant into the profile you just opened. Wash first, always. Sand only if washing has not cleared it, or if the recoat window has already gone.

The recoat window is the clock you are racing

Blush matters most when another coat is going over it, and coatings have a window inside which the next coat bonds chemically to the last one. Miss it and the next coat has to key in mechanically instead, which means abrading the whole floor rather than washing it.

That window belongs to the product, not to this guide, and it moves with temperature: the same material that gives you a comfortable afternoon at one temperature can close the window in a fraction of that on a hot slab. Read it off your data sheet for the conditions you are actually working in. The practical consequence is simple. If you see blush and you intend to recoat, wash it now rather than at the end of the day, because the wash is cheap inside the window and turns into a full abrasion pass outside it.

How to fix it if it’s already happened

  • Wash it off with warm water and a mild detergent (dish soap, TSP, or a degreaser) and a stiff brush, because blush is water-soluble and solvents don’t remove it effectively. Rinse well and let the surface dry before recoating
  • Only sand or screen as a fallback if the recoat window has already passed or a wash doesn’t fully clear it, because abrading before washing can spread the blush around rather than lift it
  • Never coat directly over blush, because it prevents proper adhesion and is a common cause of a topcoat peeling later

Common mistakes

  • Reaching for solvent. Blush is water soluble, so solvent spreads it thinner and wider instead of removing it
  • Sanding before washing, which drives a water soluble film down into the profile rather than lifting it off
  • Deciding it is cosmetic and leaving it. On its own it mostly is, right up until something is coated over it, and unremoved blush is one of the most common causes of a topcoat peeling later
  • Rinsing and coating straight away. The surface has to be dry again before the next coat, or you have swapped one moisture problem for another
  • Coating into a falling evening temperature in humid weather, which is the combination that produces it most reliably
