Metallic Epoxy System

This is what the layers do, what the slab has to be, and why the least repeatable floor on the market is sometimes exactly the right answer and sometimes the wrong one.

Specify it where character is wanted, and avoid it where the appearance has to be predictable, matched across sessions, or repairable invisibly.
What the stack is, and what each layer is for
Base coat
Bonds the system to the concrete and, unusually, is also part of the appearance. It is normally dark, because the metallic layer is translucent in places and what shows through those places is this coat. Choosing it is a look decision as well as an adhesion one.
Metallic color coat
The effect itself: resin carrying fine metallic pigment that separates and drifts as the material flows and is worked. It is the least predictable layer in any system on this site, and its coverage rate is the one our sizing guide singles out as hardest to plan.
Clear topcoat
Everything the floor has to survive happens here. It also decides how the effect reads, because you are looking at the pattern through it, so gloss level is an appearance decision rather than only a durability one.

The installer is part of the product
This is the property that separates metallic from every other system in this library, and it should be settled with the client before anything is ordered.
The pattern comes from how the material was moved: by whom, at what temperature, on that slab, on that day. Two floors from the same kits by the same person will not match, and neither will two halves of one floor worked differently. There is no setting to dial in, no way to reproduce a photograph, and no way to promise a specific result in advance.
The working answer is a sample board made with the actual products over the actual base color, agreed as a representation of character rather than as a specimen to be matched. That does two jobs: it shows what this combination genuinely does, and it establishes what was promised. Without one, the standard the floor is judged against is whatever the client has in their head, which is usually a photograph of somebody else's floor. What the system demands of the slab
The ordinary gates apply unchanged. The slab has to be sound, mechanically profiled, free of sealers and curing compounds, and dry enough, because the whole build hangs off the base coat to concrete bond and nothing above can rescue it. How to prep concrete for epoxy covers those gates.
Then there is one demand no other system on this site makes as strongly: flatness. The metallic coat is a flowing, self-leveling layer, so it runs to the low places. Material collects where the floor dips and thins where it rises, and because the effect depends on how much material is present, the finished pattern maps the shape of the concrete underneath it. A flat floor shows the effect you worked. A dished floor shows the dish, permanently, in a way no amount of technique corrects.
So on a slab with real shape problems, leveling is not an optional improvement before a metallic floor, it is part of the specification.
Where it wins
- Nothing else looks like it. The floor reads as depth rather than as a surface, and that is not achievable with pigment, chips or polishing. Where the brief is a striking floor, this is the system that answers it
- Every floor is unique, and for some clients that is the point. The same property that makes it unrepeatable makes it individual, which sells well in showrooms, hospitality, retail and residential feature spaces
- It performs like any other resin floor of the same topcoat. Decorative does not mean fragile. What the floor resists is decided by the clear layer, not by the effect underneath it
- It hides slab color completely. Staining, patch repairs and discoloration disappear under an opaque base coat and a metallic layer, so the concrete's history stops mattering
Where it is the wrong choice
- Where the look has to be approved in advance and delivered exactly. It cannot be promised, so accepting that requirement is accepting a dispute
- Across large areas laid in separate sessions. Joins between differently worked areas are visible and permanent, so the floor has to be planned as one continuous operation or not specified at all
- Where sections may later need patching. A repair cannot be blended into a pattern that was never systematic. This is the practical difference from a flake floor, where a patch disappears into a busy field
- Where somebody else will maintain or extend it. Matching the floor is not a skill that transfers with the building, so an extension years later is effectively a new floor
- Where the slab has real shape problems and cannot be leveled. The effect will map them, and the client will read that as a fault
- Where nobody actually cares what it looks like. If the requirement is durability or chemical resistance, a simpler system with the same topcoat delivers it without the appearance risk
How it fails, and which layer is responsible

It is wrong where a section may later need patching, because a repair cannot be blended into a pattern that was never systematic. And it is wrong where somebody else will have to maintain or extend the floor, since matching it is not a skill that transfers with the building.
It is also the wrong specification when the real requirement is durability or chemistry rather than appearance. A metallic floor performs according to its topcoat, exactly like any other resin system, so if nobody cares what it looks like there is no reason to accept the risk that comes with it.
Does the metallic effect affect how the floor performs?
Almost not at all, and separating the two is useful when a client asks whether a decorative floor is a serious one.
What the floor resists is decided by the topcoat over the effect, its chemistry and how well it was built. The metallic coat underneath contributes body but is not what takes traffic, chemicals, heat or cleaning. A metallic floor with a good topcoat performs like any other floor with that topcoat.
The one genuine performance consideration is that the effect makes wear visible in a particular way. Because the surface reads as depth, anything that dulls or scratches the clear layer flattens the illusion rather than merely marking the surface, so the same wear reads as a bigger loss than it would on a flat floor. That argues for a hard-wearing topcoat rather than against the system.
Should you always make a sample board first?
For anything you are being paid for, yes, and it does two separate jobs that are worth naming.
The first is technical. The effect depends on the products, the base color underneath, the temperature and how the material is worked, so a board is the only way to see what this combination actually does before it is on a customer floor. The second is commercial, and it is the one that saves arguments. A board agreed in advance establishes what was promised. Without it the standard the floor gets judged against is whatever the client has in their head, usually from a photograph of somebody else’s floor, and no metallic install survives that comparison.
