Full Broadcast Flake System
A resin base coat, vinyl flake thrown into it until the surface will take no more, then a clear topcoat over the top. This is what each layer is for, what the system asks of the concrete underneath it, and the honest account of where it wins and where it does not belong.

The flake is the look and the bulk; the topcoat is what the floor actually has to survive on. It is an excellent choice where a busy, forgiving, hard-wearing surface is wanted, and the wrong one where the floor has to be seamless, sanitary, mirror smooth, or back in service tomorrow.
What the stack is, and what each layer is for
The build-up is simple and the roles are not interchangeable. Most disappointments with a flake floor come from expecting one layer to do another layer's job.
Primer, where the spec calls for one
Its job is adhesion and sealing the concrete so the coat above does not starve into a thirsty slab. Sometimes a separate product, sometimes the base coat doing double duty. Which you have is a data sheet question rather than a general rule.
Base coat
The layer that bonds the system to the floor and holds the flake. It has to still be liquid when the broadcast happens, which is what drives how a flake crew is staffed and how the floor is broken into sections. Applying an epoxy base coat covers laying it evenly, which matters here because the flake reads the film underneath it.
Flake, broadcast to refusal
The decorative layer and most of the bulk. Thrown into wet resin until the surface accepts no more, so the finished color comes from chips rather than from pigment. Flake color blend ratios covers the blend, which is the decision that actually sets the look.
The scrape, which is a build step
A full broadcast leaves loose flake lying on the surface and cured flake standing on edge. Both have to come off before topcoating: loose flake gets locked under the topcoat and stays loose, and standing edges either poke through or leave a rough finish. This is part of the build, not a tidy-up.
Topcoat, one or two
The surface everything happens to. It takes the traffic, the chemicals and the cleaning, and it buries the sharp edges the flake leaves so the floor feels smooth rather than abrasive. On a heavy broadcast a second coat is often necessary rather than optional, because one may not fully bury the profile.
Grip, if it is required
Not a layer so much as a decision made inside the topcoat. A broadcast floor has texture as a by-product, which is not the same as a specified level of slip resistance. Where grip comes from covers adding it deliberately.

What the system demands of the slab
Nothing about the flake makes the system more forgiving of the concrete underneath it, and the assumption that it does is worth naming because a decorative floor invites it.
The whole build hangs off one bond: base coat to concrete. No layer above can rescue it. If that bond fails the floor comes off in sheets and the flake and topcoat come with it, which is why our troubleshooting pages separate a slab bond failure from an intercoat one by looking at what is on the back of the piece that lifted.
So the gates are the ordinary ones: the slab has to be sound, mechanically profiled rather than merely clean, free of sealers and curing compounds, and dry enough for the system going on it. Where it wins
- It hides what concrete looks like. Color variation, patch repairs, staining and blotchiness disappear under a layer of chips, and a busier blend hides more than a subtle one. This is the property that sells the system
- It ages visibly better than a solid color. A uniform field shows every scuff and worn traffic lane because there is something to compare against. A busy surface does not, so the same wear reads as far less
- It is a thicker system than a plain coating. More material has to be lost before anything shows through, which is a real durability contribution even though it is not what resists chemicals
- The texture is useful in most settings. A broadcast surface is not a smooth one, so it is less treacherous wet than a gloss solid color floor, provided nobody is relying on a specific measured value
- It is repairable in a way seamless floors are not. A patched area in a busy flake field is far less conspicuous than a patch in a uniform one, because the pattern breaks up the join
Where it is the wrong choice
The honest half, and more useful than the list above, because a system recommended everywhere is a system nobody can specify with confidence.
- Where the surface has to be sanitary and seamless. A broadcast floor is textured by nature, and texture holds soil. If the requirement is a surface that can be fully cleaned down, this is the wrong family of system
- Where a specific slip resistance has to be demonstrated. The texture a broadcast produces is a by-product, not a designed value, so it cannot be offered as a number. Grip that has to be specified must be added on purpose
- Where the wanted look is smooth, uniform or mirror finish. That is a different system, and no amount of topcoat turns a broadcast floor into one
- Where the slab problem is flatness. The system follows the surface rather than leveling it, so a dished or uneven floor is still dished and uneven afterward. That problem is solved underneath the coating, not by it
- Where a crack is moving. A live crack telegraphs through a flake floor as readily as through any coating. Crack telegraphing covers why, and what does and does not help
- Where the floor cannot be out of service long enough. This is a multi-stage build with a cure wait and a scrape in the middle of it, so it is a poor fit for a job that needs the space back quickly. A one-day system is a different specification
How it fails, and which layer is responsible
Diagnosis on this system is mostly a question of identifying the layer, and each failure has a page that owns it.
- Thin or bald patches in the flake. A broadcast layer problem, and usually a timing or coverage one rather than a material one. Flake bald spots and uneven broadcast
- The whole system lifting off the concrete. The base coat to slab bond, which means preparation. Epoxy floor peeling
- The topcoat letting go of the flake layer. An intercoat bond problem, usually a recoat window or something on the surface. Intercoat delamination
- A rough or gritty finish underfoot. Usually the scrape, or a topcoat that never buried the flake profile. Rough or gritty topcoat
- Coating lifting where a car parks. Almost always a floor returned to service too early, or a topcoat never rated for vehicles. Hot tire pickup

What is a full broadcast flake floor?
It is a resin floor whose surface is made of vinyl chips rather than of pigment.
A base coat goes down, and flake is thrown into it while it is still liquid until the surface will accept no more, which is what "to refusal" means. Once it has cured, the loose and standing flake is scraped and vacuumed off, and a clear topcoat is applied over what is left keyed into the base.
The result is a floor whose color and pattern come from a solid layer of chips locked between two layers of resin. That single fact is what separates it from every other resinous floor, and most of its advantages and its limits follow from it.
How many layers is a flake system?
Three at minimum and often four, and the count matters less than what each one is doing.
The base coat bonds to the concrete and holds the flake. The flake is the decorative and wear layer. The topcoat is the surface everything actually happens to: it takes the traffic, the chemicals and the cleaning, and it is what buries the sharp edges of the chips so the floor feels smooth rather than rough. A second topcoat is common, and on a heavy broadcast it is often necessary rather than optional, because one coat may not fully bury the profile the flake creates.
Some specifications add a separate primer under the base coat, which is a different job from the base coat even where the same product does both. Whether yours does is a data sheet question.
What prep does a flake floor need?
The same prep as any bonded resin system, and the flake changes none of it.
This is worth saying plainly because a decorative floor invites the assumption that it is more forgiving, and the opposite is closer to the truth: the system is only as good as the bond between the base coat and the concrete, and nothing in the layers above can rescue that bond. The slab has to be sound, mechanically profiled, clean and dry enough, and a coating over an existing sealer or a slab with a moisture problem will fail whatever goes on top of it.

Does a flake floor hide slab defects?
Some, and it is worth being precise, because this is one of the main reasons it gets specified and one of the main reasons people are disappointed.
It hides color variation, patch repairs, staining and general blotchiness extremely well, because the surface you end up looking at is chips rather than concrete. A busy blend hides more than a subtle one. That is a genuine and useful property.
What it does not hide is shape. A slab that is uneven, dished, or has a high spot is still all of those things under a flake floor, because the system follows the surface rather than leveling it. Nor does it stop a moving crack: a crack in the slab will telegraph through a flake floor as readily as through any other coating, and if that is the problem you are trying to solve then the answer is under the coating rather than in it.
Is a flake floor more durable than a plain epoxy floor?
Usually in practice, but not for the reason people assume, and the distinction changes what you should specify.
Durability comes from the topcoat. The flake is not what resists abrasion, chemicals or heat; the clear layer over it is, and its chemistry is what decides how the floor performs. A flake floor with a weak topcoat is not a durable floor.
Where the flake genuinely helps is in how the floor ages. A solid color surface shows every scratch, scuff and worn traffic lane because there is a uniform field to compare against. A flake surface is visually busy, so the same wear is far less visible, and the system is thicker overall, which gives more material to lose before anything shows through. So it tends to look acceptable for longer, which is what most people mean by durable even when it is not what they say.
Where is a flake floor the wrong choice?
Several places, and being straight about them is more useful than a list of advantages.
It is the wrong choice where a seamless, easily sanitized surface is required, because a broadcast floor is textured by nature and texture holds soil. It is wrong where the specification calls for a specific level of grip that has to be demonstrated, since the texture a broadcast gives you is a by-product rather than a designed value. It is wrong where the look wanted is a smooth, uniform or mirror finish, which is a different system entirely. It is wrong on a slab whose problem is flatness or a live crack, because the system follows the surface and telegraphs movement.
And it is a poor fit for a job that cannot give up the time. A full broadcast is a multi-stage build with a cure wait and a scrape between stages, so it is not the system to choose when the floor has to be back in service quickly.
