How to Install a Flake Floor
The sequence a full broadcast flake floor actually follows, what has to be true before you open the first kit, and the three moments where the window closes whether you are ready or not.
A full broadcast flake floor goes down in one continuous session: mix, spread the base coat, and broadcast flake into it while it is still wet. Then it cures untouched, gets scraped and vacuumed back to a flat surface, and takes its topcoat. The prep, the quantities and the cure windows are all settled before any of that starts. What makes the day go well is not the technique on any single step, it is knowing which steps have a window that closes while you are standing in it.
A flake floor is a chain of windows, not a list of tasks
Most installation guides read as a checklist, and a checklist quietly implies that the steps are independent and that you can pause between them. On a flake floor you cannot. The moment Part B goes into Part A, a clock starts that nothing on site can stop, and three of the steps below have to happen inside a window rather than simply happen in order.
That is the difference between a flake floor and a solid color coat. A solid coat is one liquid going down at one thickness, and if you are slow the worst case is usually a visible lap line. On a flake floor the chips have to land in resin that is still wet enough to grip them. Miss that and the floor looks finished at the time and fails later, which is the most expensive way for a job to go wrong.
What has to be true before you open the first kit
None of these are installation steps. They are gates, and every one of them is cheaper to fail before the kit is open than after. The point of no return is the moment the two parts meet, so this list is the last chance to stop.
The slab has passed prep
- Sound, profiled, clean and dry, in that order
- All four gates belong to the prep pillar, including the moisture result, which is the one that can cancel the coating rather than reschedule it
The conditions allow it today
- Slab temperature and dew point checked on the day, not from the forecast
- The dew point calculator gives the go or no go. Coating a slab that is too close to the dew point traps moisture under the floor you are about to build
The material is on site and counted
- All three layers, counted in whole kits and whole boxes rather than raw quantity
- Sizing a complete flake floor system covers the takeoff. Running short of flake in the middle of a broadcast is not a delay, it is a defect, because you cannot pause and go to the supplier
The floor is broken into sections
- Planned so a wet edge is never left waiting, and so you finish at the door rather than in a corner
- Edges and detail cut in first, because you cannot go back to them once the field is wet
The run, in order
Each step below hands off to the page that owns it in depth. The value of the sequence is the order and the handovers, not a restatement of technique that lives elsewhere.
- 1. Mix, and mix completely. Ratio first, then full dispersion including the sides and the bottom of the pail. An unmixed streak does not cure, and on a flake floor it is invisible until the scrape pulls a soft patch out. - 2. Get it out of the pail. Mixed resin left in the bucket heats itself and shortens every window that follows. Pouring it onto the floor and spreading it is not just the next step, it is what keeps the pot life you were promised
- 3. Spread the base coat to an even film. Even matters more than fast here, because the flake reads the film thickness underneath it. A thin patch grips less flake and shows as a light area after the scrape
- 4. Broadcast into the wet resin. This is the step everything else is arranged around, and it starts before the section is fully spread rather than after. How much flake do you need for a full broadcast floor covers what broadcasting to refusal means and what it consumes
- 5. Leave it alone while it cures. The temptation to tidy a section that looks uneven is the cause of a lot of visible repairs. Loose flake on a curing floor is normal and comes off at the scrape
- 6. Scrape, then vacuum. Knock down the flake standing on edge and take off everything loose. This is a build step rather than a clean-up step: what you leave behind gets locked under the topcoat permanently

Why the broadcast decides your crew size
Crew size on a flake floor is not a budget decision, it is set by the chemistry. The wet edge moves at whatever pace the resin allows, and the broadcast has to stay with it. One person doing both jobs is always behind the edge, and the parts of the floor that get broadcast last are the parts where the resin has had the longest to skin.
That is why the standard shape is one person keeping the base coat moving and one broadcasting behind them, with a third mixing on anything large enough that a break in supply would stall the edge. It is also why the sections are planned in advance: the crew has to be able to finish a section, not merely start one.
The throwing technique follows from the same constraint. Flake is thrown up and let fall so it lands flat and lands evenly, rather than thrown across the floor where it lands on edge and lands in a stripe. A contractor who is rushing to catch the edge stops throwing upward, and the pattern in the finished floor records it.
What you can still fix, and what you cannot

Still fixable
- Flake density that is lighter than you wanted, while the resin is still wet, by broadcasting more
- A rough finish after the scrape, by taking the knockdown further before the topcoat
- Loose flake, at any point before the topcoat goes on
Not fixable without grinding back
- Flake that landed on resin which had already skinned. It never keyed in, and adding more does not change that
- Loose or standing flake that has been sealed under the topcoat
- Any of it, if the slab failed a prep gate. The floor is then bonded to the problem rather than to the concrete, and flake bald spots and uneven broadcast covers how that surfaces

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you broadcast flake into wet epoxy, or wait for it to set?
Into wet epoxy, and that single fact drives the whole install. The flake has to land in resin that is still liquid enough to wet the edge of the chip and hold it. That is what keys the flake into the floor instead of leaving it sitting on top. What happens if you broadcast too late?
The resin skins over and the flake sits on the surface rather than keying in. It looks broadcast at the time, which is what makes it dangerous, and it comes off at the scrape or later under traffic, leaving thin and bald areas. It is not repairable by adding more flake to a cured surface, because the new flake has nothing wet to key into either.
Can one person install a flake floor?
On a small floor, yes. On anything larger it stops being a staffing preference and becomes a timing problem: one person cannot both keep a wet edge moving and broadcast into it before it starts to set. Two is the normal crew for that reason, and on a large floor a third person mixing keeps the other two from ever waiting on material.
Do you have to scrape a flake floor before topcoating?
Yes, and skipping it is one of the more expensive shortcuts available. A full broadcast leaves loose flake lying on the surface and cured flake standing on edge. Loose flake gets trapped under the topcoat and stays loose. Standing edges either poke through the topcoat or leave a rough finish. Both are only fixable by grinding back, so the scrape is not a tidy-up step, it is part of the build.
Can you install a flake floor over an existing coating?
That is a preparation question rather than an installation one, and it is answered before this sequence starts. The short version is that the existing coating has to be sound, bonded, and profiled, or removed.
