The First 24 Hours After Coating a Floor
A floor that looks finished and feels hard can still be days away from being usable. This is what each cure stage actually permits, what a green floor has to be protected from, and what to tell the customer before you leave the site.
Keep everything off the floor, including anything you might be tempted to lay down to protect it. Cardboard and plastic trap what the film is still releasing and print themselves into the finish. Expect the floor to look completely finished long before it is, because hardness arrives well ahead of chemical and heat resistance. And hand it over with three dates rather than one: when it can be walked on, when things can come back in, and when it is genuinely done.
Cure is a ladder of permissions, not a finish line
A data sheet does not give one cure time, it gives several, and they are separate because each one allows something different. Treating them as a single number with some safety margin around it is where most first-day damage starts.
- The surface stops being sticky. The earliest rung, and the least useful one for deciding what you can do. Tack free covers what it does mark, which is worth knowing: the point at which the floor stops collecting dust, grit and insects out of the air, so the space can be opened up again
- It will take foot traffic. Hours later than the rung above, sometimes much more. This permits walking, carefully, and inspecting. It does not permit moving anything in
- Light use becomes acceptable. Furniture and light equipment can come back. This is usually the date a customer actually cares about and the one least often given to them
- Full cure. The film has built the properties it was specified for. Only here does the floor take vehicles, spills, cleaning chemicals and heat. Hot tire pickup is what happens when the gap between this rung and the one before it is treated as a formality
Every one of those figures belongs to the product and to the temperature it was rated at, and a cold slab pushes all of them out together. Chemical and heat resistance arrive last
This is the most useful thing to understand about the first day, and it explains nearly every early failure that looks like bad luck.
Curing keeps building links inside the film long after the surface has stopped feeling soft. Hardness comes relatively early. Resistance to solvents, chemicals, heat and sustained load comes late. So there is a long window in which a floor is firm underfoot, looks completely finished to anybody standing on it, and will still be marked by a spill or a hot tire that it would shrug off a week later.
Nothing about the appearance of the floor tells you where it is in that process. There is no visual test, no touch test and no useful rule of thumb, which is precisely why the dates matter and why judging by eye fails. It is also why the damage tends to be blamed on the coating rather than on the timing: the floor looked ready, so the assumption is that it was.
What a green floor has to be protected from
Less than people expect in some ways, and much more in others. The list is short and specific.
Anything laid flat on it
Sheeting, cardboard, offcuts, dust sheets, a rug. All of them trap what the film is still releasing and hold it against the surface. This is the mistake people make while actively trying to help, and it has its own section below.
Point loads
A ladder foot, a pallet corner, a jack stand or a full drum left standing overnight presses into a film that can still move, and the impression sets when the coating hardens around it. Narrow feet do more damage than wide ones carrying the same weight.
Water, early
A leak, a sprinkler, a wash-down or an open roller door in the rain. Early enough and it dulls or spots the surface permanently; later it is usually cosmetic. Find those risks before coating, because a wet floor cannot be protected after the fact.
Tape stuck to the surface
Masking a green floor to mark it off does the damage the marking was meant to prevent, and pulls finish away when it comes off. Tape the walls, not the floor, and use barriers and a locked door rather than lines.
Traffic that was not agreed
Other trades are the usual source, and the floor is often the last thing finished in a building that everybody else still needs access to. This is a scheduling conversation rather than a coatings one, and it belongs in the handover.
A space that is cooling
Cure slows as the slab drops, and a falling slab is what puts condensation onto a curing surface overnight. Applying epoxy in cold weather covers holding heat through cure rather than only through application.
Covering a curing floor is usually worse than leaving it open
Worth its own section because it is done with the best intentions, on expensive floors, by people who are trying to look after them.
A film that is still curing is still releasing solvent and still moving. Laying anything on top of it traps what is trying to leave and holds it against the surface, so what you get is a soft, cloudy or dulled area in the exact shape of the covering. Sheet plastic is the worst case because it seals. But cardboard is not a safe alternative: it prints its texture into the film, bonds to it, and tears fibers off into the finish when somebody lifts it.
The rule that works is to keep things off the floor rather than to put something between them and the floor. Barriers at the doors, tape on the walls, signage, and where possible a locked room. Once the coating has reached full cure, covering it is an entirely ordinary thing to do and none of this applies.
Handover: three dates, in writing
Most early damage to a new floor is not carelessness, it is a customer acting on a single date they were given verbally. Replacing that with three written ones is the cheapest protection available for the work you just did.
- When it can be walked on. And that this means walking, not moving in
- When things can come back in. Furniture and light equipment, with the point-load warning attached, because this is when the ladder feet and pallet corners arrive
- When it is genuinely finished. Vehicles, spills, washing and cleaning chemicals. State this one plainly, because it is the date that gets ignored
- Say that it will look finished long before it is. This single sentence prevents more damage than the dates do, because without it a customer reasonably concludes that a floor which looks done is done
- List what not to do in the meantime. Nothing laid flat on it, no tape on it, no washing it, no parking on it whatever it looks like
Written down, this is also the record you want if the floor is later disputed, which is the same reason the conditions on the day are worth recording. A short note beats a long conversation, because the person who damages the floor is often not the person you spoke to.

Frequently Asked Questions
When can you walk on a new epoxy floor?
Earlier than you can use it, and the two are not the same permission.
A data sheet lists cure as several separate stages, and they can be a long way apart: the point at which the surface stops being sticky, the point at which it will take foot traffic, the point at which light use is acceptable, and full cure. Each one allows something different, and the figure you want is the one for what you are about to do rather than the first one on the list.

The floor feels hard. Why is it not finished?

Can I put down cardboard or plastic to protect a new floor?
Not in the first day, and the instinct to do it causes more damage than the traffic it is meant to prevent.

What happens if a new floor gets wet in the first 24 hours?
It depends entirely on how early, and the honest answer is that it might be nothing or it might be a recoat.
Water landing on a film that has not yet stopped being tacky can leave a permanently dulled or spotted patch, because it interferes with the surface while it is still forming. Water on a floor that has passed that point and is merely still building strength is usually cosmetic and often nothing at all. With some product families moisture at the wrong moment also drives a whitening reaction inside the film rather than a mark on top of it, which does not wash off.
The practical implication is about the building rather than the coating. Find the leaks, the sprinklers, the wash-down schedules and the roof problems before you coat, not after, because there is no way to protect a wet floor after the fact.
Why is the floor marked where something was left standing on it?
Because a green film deforms under a load that a cured one carries without complaint.

Give them the point at which they can walk on it, the point at which they can move furniture and light equipment back in, and the point at which the floor is genuinely finished and will take vehicles, spills and cleaning. Say plainly that the floor will look completely finished long before the last of those dates, because that is the misunderstanding that costs people their new floor.
Add the specific things not to do in the meantime: nothing laid flat on the surface, no tape stuck to it, no washing it, and no parking on it whatever it looks like. A short written note is worth more than a long conversation, and it is also the record you want if the floor is later disputed.
