Tack Free

The point at which a coating stops being sticky to the touch. It is the first and weakest of the cure stages a data sheet lists, it says nothing about strength, and it is the milestone most often mistaken for a floor being finished.

What tack free means

A coating is tack free when its surface has stopped transferring. Press a knuckle to it and nothing comes away, nothing stays behind, and the film does not feel sticky. That is the whole of the claim.

It is the first of the cure stages a data sheet lists, and it is by some distance the weakest. The reaction that turns a liquid into a floor is barely underway at this point: what has happened is that the very top of the film has knitted enough to stop being adhesive, while the material below it is still soft and still reacting. A floor can be entirely tack free and still be days away from being able to do its job.

The word does opposite jobs in two places

This is the part worth being careful about, because the same root turns up as both a milestone and a fault, and which one is meant depends entirely on the clock.

On a data sheet, tack free is normal progress: a scheduled point a curing floor passes through. On a jobsite, calling a floor tacky almost always means it is still sticky long after it should have stopped, which is a cure problem rather than a stage. Sticky at four hours may be exactly right; sticky at four days is not, and epoxy that is not curing separates the causes and distinguishes soft from gummy from tacky, which point at different faults.

What the figure is actually for

Since the floor cannot be used yet, it is fair to ask why the time is published at all. The answer is that tack free is the moment the floor stops collecting things.

Until then, anything that lands on the surface stays in it. Airborne dust, grit walked in from outside, fibers off a rag, insects drawn to work lights: all of it sticks and becomes part of the finish permanently. Tack free is the point at which the air around the floor stops being a threat to it, and that is a genuinely useful thing to be able to time. It is when a fan can be pointed somewhere else, when a door can be opened, and when somebody can walk the edge to look at the work without leaving a mark in it.

What it is not

It is not permission to walk the floor, and it is not permission to park on it. Foot traffic and full cure are separate stages with their own times, and the cure stages on a data sheet are listed apart from each other precisely because they are not interchangeable.

It is also not the recoat window. The two are unconnected: a recoat minimum and maximum are set by how one layer bonds to another, not by how the surface feels, and depending on the product the window may open before tack free or well after it. Read those as their own figures rather than inferring them from a knuckle test.

The gap between the two is easiest to see on a deep pour, where a lift can feel firm and dry to the touch while the mass underneath is still far from cured. One last caution. Every cure figure on a sheet is quoted at a reference temperature, and a real floor is never one temperature throughout. A bay by an open roller door, a slab over unheated ground and a strip lit by a skylight each arrive at their own pace, so treat the published time as describing the middle of the floor and check the coldest part before assuming the whole slab is there.

Is a tack-free floor ready to walk on?

So tack free is the moment you can stop protecting the surface from the air around it: when a fan can be pointed elsewhere, a door can be opened, and someone can walk the perimeter to inspect without leaving a mark.
