How to Apply an Epoxy Base Coat
A base coat is a bed, not a finish. This is the physical act of getting it out of the pail and onto the slab at an even film: what places the material, what evens it, where the coat is cut in first, and the point at which you have to stop touching it.
Cut in a narrow band at the edges, pour the mixed material out onto the floor as a ribbon rather than a puddle, push it out with a squeegee or a rake to distribute the quantity, then even it with a roller and stop. Work back into wet material, reload before the roller runs dry, and check the floor from a low angle rather than from above. The base coat is a bed for what comes next, not a surface anyone will ever look at.
A base coat is a bed, not a finish
This is the reframe that makes the rest of the page make sense, and it is the one most often missing on site. On a broadcast floor the base coat has two jobs: bond to the slab, and stay liquid enough for long enough that flake thrown into it keys in rather than sitting on top. Almost none of it will be visible when the floor is finished. The flake covers it, and the topcoat covers the flake.
That changes what a good base coat looks like. It is not the flattest, glossiest coat you can produce, it is an even one, applied fast enough that the broadcast happens while the resin is still open. A crew that spends an extra few minutes perfecting the appearance of a section has not improved the floor. It has spent part of the only window that actually decides how the floor turns out, and the install sequence covers why that window is the one everything else is arranged around.
Where the base coat is the finished surface, in a solid color floor with no broadcast, the priorities do shift toward appearance. Even there the film comes first, because a coat that looks perfect and is thin in places is a durability problem wearing a cosmetic disguise.
Placing, spreading and evening are three different motions
Most of the trouble in applying a base coat comes from collapsing these into one. They use different tools, they have different aims, and only the last of them is about the look of the film.
Place it out of the pail
Pour the mixed material onto the floor as a ribbon along the edge you are working from, not as a puddle in the middle of the section. A ribbon is already roughly distributed, so the next motion has less distance to move it. A puddle has to be pushed outward in every direction from one point, which is slower and tends to leave the middle heavy.

Spread it to distribute
A squeegee or a notched rake moves quantity. Its job is to get roughly the right amount of material over roughly the right area quickly, and it does that without carrying anything on a nap. This is the step that covers ground.
Do not judge the finish here. A squeegeed floor looks streaked and ridged and is supposed to. The aim is distribution, and trying to make it beautiful with the squeegee wastes the time the roller needs.
Even it with the roller
The roller pulls the distributed material into a consistent film and works it into the texture of the concrete rather than leaving it bridging over the surface. That pass has a name and a set of limits of its own: back-rolling covers what it is, how it differs from a final laying off pass, and why continuing it past the point it has done its job makes the floor worse rather than better.
Nap length changes what the roller lays down and belongs to the data sheet for the product, not to a general rule.
Cut in first, and keep the cut-in narrow
Everything you cannot roll up to has to be dealt with before the field goes down, because once the field is wet you cannot get back to it. That means the perimeter, columns, thresholds, the line where a wall meets the slab, and around anything that could not be moved out.
The trap is not forgetting to cut in. It is cutting in too much. A generous band brushed all the way around a large floor before the field is started has been sitting there the whole time it took to do the rest of the perimeter, and the first stretch of it has begun to set before the field ever reaches it. What you get is a lap mark following the entire boundary of the floor, reading as a frame, and it is permanent.
Cut in narrow, and cut in only as far ahead as the field will actually reach inside the working time. On a large floor that means cutting in section by section rather than doing the whole perimeter as one job at the start. Where holidays come from while you are applying
A holiday is a place the film never arrived, or arrived so thin that the concrete underneath is effectively bare. That page covers what one is and why a single gap matters more than a floor that is evenly thin. What it does not cover, because it is a definition rather than a technique, is the handful of habits during application that produce almost all of them.
- A roller that ran dry without anyone noticing. The last part of a pass off a roller with nothing left on it lays almost nothing while feeling exactly like the rest of the pass. Reload before the roller is empty rather than when it starts to drag
- Working away from wet material instead of back into it. Always start a pass in coating that is already down and pull outward, so every new stretch has a wet join behind it. Starting fresh in an untouched area and working back toward the section leaves a seam at best and a gap at worst
- Poor light. A wet floor is uniformly shiny from above whatever its thickness, so checking a section by looking down at it tells you very little. Look along the floor from a low angle, with the light raking across it, which is the same way you would look for lap marks
- Edges, corners and anything that was not moved. Attention runs out at the boundaries of a floor rather than in the middle, and so does coating. The cut-in above is what protects these, which is why it is a build step and not a tidy-up
- Planning an exit that walks back across the section. Work toward the door rather than away from it. Being stranded in a corner means either walking a wet coat that is no longer able to close behind you, or leaving the last stretch unworked
Being in the wet, and when to stay off it
On anything larger than a small floor somebody has to stand in the coating, and spiked shoes are what make that possible. The spikes displace material rather than smearing it, so the film closes back over the holes they leave. On a broadcast floor this is also how flake is thrown from inside a section rather than only from its edges, which is what lets a section be wider than one person can reach.
The window for that is the same window as everything else on the day. While the material is still genuinely open it flows back and the marks disappear. Once it has begun to gel it does not, so spike holes stay, footprints stay, and a section that was fine a few minutes earlier acquires permanent texture from the person trying to improve it.
The practical rule is that being in the coat should be purposeful. Walk in to place material, to reach an area, or to broadcast. Do not wander back across a finished section to look at it, and do not step back in to touch up something you noticed late.
Knowing whether the film is right, rather than whether it looks right
These are different questions and only one of them can be answered by eye. A section can look completely even and be spread well under the rate the product needs, which is the failure that survives to the end of the job: the floor looks finished, wears through early, and nobody knows why.
The check that works is arithmetic rather than visual. You know how much material went into a section and you know the area of that section, so you know the rate you actually achieved, and you can compare it against the rate the data sheet asks for. Do that on the first section rather than the last, while there is still time to change how much you are putting down.

What is the difference between a base coat and a primer?
They are jobs rather than materials, and one product can do both.
A primer is there to bond to the concrete and to seal it, so that what follows has something sound to hold onto and does not lose material into a thirsty slab. A base coat is the body of the system: on a broadcast floor it is the bed the flake keys into, and it carries most of the build the specification asks for.
Some systems ask for one product doing both jobs in a single application. Others prime, wait, and then apply a separate base coat. Which of those you have in front of you is a data sheet question rather than a general rule, and getting it wrong usually means either a coat that starves into the concrete or a build that never reaches specification.
Should you roll or squeegee an epoxy base coat?
Both, because they are not alternatives. They are two stages of the same operation.
A squeegee or a notched rake moves quantity. It takes material that has been poured onto the floor and pushes it out to roughly the right thickness over roughly the right area, quickly, without carrying it anywhere on a nap. A roller then evens what the squeegee left, pulls it into a consistent film, and works it into the texture of the concrete rather than letting it bridge across the surface.
Trying to do the whole job with a roller means ferrying every gallon across the floor on the nap, which is slow enough that the wet edge can be gone before the section is covered. Trying to do it with a squeegee alone leaves a film that was never worked into the surface. The tools themselves are specified by the product, but the division of labor is the same either way.
How thick should an epoxy base coat be?
At the spread rate the data sheet gives for that product, which is why there is no number on this page.
The honest position is that a thickness quoted in a guide is worthless without the product it belongs to. Two coatings sold at the same price per gallon can differ enormously in how far they go and what film they build, because that is decided by solids content rather than by price or by category.

Do you have to cut in the edges before the field?
Yes, and the part that gets missed is keeping the cut-in narrow.
You cannot reach an edge once the field is wet, so the perimeter, the columns, the thresholds and anything you cannot roll up to have to be brushed or rolled in first. That much is well known. What catches crews out is cutting in a generous band all the way around a large floor before starting the field, because the first stretch of that band has begun to set by the time the field arrives at it.
The result is a lap mark following the entire perimeter, which reads as a frame around the floor and is one of the more visible ways to spoil an otherwise good coat. Cut in narrow, and cut in only as far ahead as the field will reach inside the working time.
Can you walk on epoxy while you are applying it?
Yes, in spiked shoes, and only while the film can still close behind the spikes.
Spiked soles let you stand in a wet coat because they displace material rather than smearing it, and the film flows back into the holes they leave. That is what makes it possible to reach the middle of a large floor at all, and on a broadcast floor it is how flake gets thrown from inside a section rather than only from its edges.
The limit is the same limit as everything else on the day. Once the material has started to gel it no longer flows back, so the spike marks stay, and so does every footprint. Walking a coat that is going off is one of the more reliable ways to put permanent texture into a floor that was fine a few minutes earlier.
The base coat looks uneven while it is still wet. Should I keep rolling it?
Almost certainly not, and the instinct to keep working it is what turns a small problem into a permanent one.
A wet coat is uniformly shiny, so what you are reading as unevenness is often nothing at all. Where it is real it is usually either a genuine thickness difference, which more rolling cannot create material to fix, or the material beginning to set, which more rolling actively damages. Working a coat that has started to gel tears a film that was trying to level itself, and the texture that leaves behind is there for good.
On a flake floor there is a second reason to leave it alone: the surface you are staring at is about to be buried under a full broadcast. Time spent perfecting the look of it is time taken off the clock for the step that actually decides how the floor turns out.
