What is a quartz broadcast floor system?
A quartz broadcast system is a floor coating where quartz aggregate is broadcast into a wet epoxy or polyaspartic base coat and pushed to saturation. Once cured, excess quartz is swept off and a clear seal coat is applied over the top. The result is a hard-wearing, slip-resistant surface used in commercial kitchens, warehouses, pool surrounds, and outdoor areas.
What is the difference between single and double broadcast?
A single broadcast system applies one epoxy coat with quartz broadcast to saturation, followed by a clear seal coat. A double broadcast system applies two epoxy coats, each with a full quartz broadcast, before sealing. Double broadcast produces a thicker, more durable profile and is recommended for heavy traffic areas, outdoor exposure, and anywhere additional chemical or abrasion resistance is required.
What coverage rate does the calculator use?
The broadcast rate defaults to a full saturation rate of 0.5 lb/ft² (2.44 kg/m²) per coat — the industry / Torginol full-broadcast figure for quartz thrown to refusal — and it is editable, so you can match your own product data sheet. A double broadcast doubles this to 1.0 lb/ft² (4.88 kg/m²) for two coats combined.
What quartz mesh size should I use?
The most common sizes are #20 mesh (coarser, more aggressive texture) and #30 mesh (finer, smoother profile). #20 mesh is standard for most commercial and industrial applications. #30 mesh is preferred for food service areas or where a finer finish is required. The broadcast rate is the same for both — mesh size affects texture and slip resistance, not quantity.
Why add a waste allowance?
When broadcasting quartz, material is lost at edges, corners, and any overspray beyond the floor boundary. Aggregate also varies slightly in density between bags and broadcast technique. A 10% waste allowance is standard for most jobs. Tight areas with lots of edges or difficult access may warrant 15%.
