How much epoxy do I need for a table top?

At the standard 1/8 in flood coat, one US gallon of mixed epoxy covers about 12–13 ft². Add a thin seal coat first — roughly 80 ft² per gallon — plus around 10% waste for edge run-off. A typical 8 ft bar top lands near 2.5 gallons all-in; a small side table needs well under half a gallon, which is why this calculator also shows fluid ounces and milliliters.

What is the difference between a seal coat and a flood coat?

The seal coat is a thin first layer, brushed or squeegeed on, that seals porous wood and stops air escaping as bubbles into your finish. The flood coat is the thick self-leveling pour — typically 1/8 in — that creates the glass-like surface. Skipping the seal coat on raw wood is the most common cause of a bubble-filled flood coat.

How deep can you pour table top epoxy?

Most table top (flood coat) epoxies are formulated for 1/8 to 1/4 in per pour. Pouring thicker traps heat from the curing reaction and can cause cracking, excessive bubbles, or a soft cure. For a deeper build, pour multiple flood coats — or switch to a deep pour epoxy, which cures slowly enough for castings measured in inches, not fractions.

Does the same math work for bar tops and countertops?

Yes — a bar top, kitchen counter, desk, or river-table top coat all use the same seal-plus-flood approach. For L-shaped counters, split the surface into rectangles, run each through the calculator, and add the totals.

Why is my mix ratio important here?

Table top epoxies are usually 1:1 by volume, but some run 2:1. The calculator splits the total into Part A and Part B for whatever ratio your product specifies — measure both parts accurately, because an off-ratio batch may never fully harden.
