An 8 ft × 3 ft bar top (96 × 36 in = 24 ft²): the 1/8 in flood coat needs 96 × 36 × 0.125 = 432 in³ = 1.87 gallons. One seal coat at 80 ft²/gal adds 0.30 gal. With 10% waste on top, the job takes 2.39 gallons of mixed product — so a 1.5-gallon kit won’t do it; order two.

A 4-seat dining table around 4 ft × 3 ft (12 ft²) needs roughly 1 gallon of flood coat at 1/8 inch, plus about a fifth of a gallon for the seal coat and waste — call it 1.2 gallons all-in. An 8 ft bar top runs about 2.5 gallons. Small pieces like a side table need only 30–40 fluid ounces.

Can I skip the seal coat?

On raw wood, no. The seal coat closes the pores so air trapped in the timber can't rise into the flood coat as bubbles. On non-porous surfaces — laminate, sealed concrete, an earlier epoxy coat — you can usually go straight to the flood coat.

Why do I need extra for edges and waste?

A flood coat self-levels, which means it flows over open edges until surface tension stops it. Coating the edges is usually the point — but it also means real usage runs above the flat-surface math. A 10% allowance is the working minimum; narrow pieces with lots of edge relative to surface need more.
