How Much Epoxy Do You Need? Coverage Rates per Gallon & Liter Explained
One number does most of the work: the coverage rate off your product’s data sheet. Here’s how to read it — and why the answer is always "more than the bare math."
Epoxy needed = floor area × number of coats ÷ coverage rate. The coverage rate (ft²/gal or m²/L) comes off your product’s technical data sheet — a 100% solids floor epoxy typically runs 140–200 ft² per gallon per coat. Then add a waste allowance, because rough concrete, edges, and the first coat always take more than the bare math.
Typical coverage rates by product type
“How far a gallon goes” depends on two things: how much of the product stays on the floor after cure (volume solids) and how thick you apply it. That’s why the answer ranges so widely across product types:
100% Solids Epoxy
- 140–200 ft²/gal (3.5–5 m²/L) per coat
- Nothing evaporates — what you spread is what cures
- The standard for body coats on flake and solid-color floors
High-Build Body Coats
- Low end of the range — often 100–150 ft²/gal (2.5–3.7 m²/L)
- Thicker film = less area per gallon, by design
Primers & Sealers
- 250–300+ ft²/gal (6–7.5+ m²/L)
- Thin penetrating films stretch much further
- Porous concrete can pull the first coat well below the listed rate
Polyaspartic & Urethane Topcoats
- Commonly 200–250 ft²/gal (5–6 m²/L)
- Applied thin — two thin coats beat one heavy one

Worked example
A 400 ft² two-car garage, coated twice with a 100% solids epoxy rated at 150 ft²/gal: 400 × 2 ÷ 150 = 5.33 gallons of mixed product. Add 10% waste and you need 5.87 gal — which in practice means ordering two 3-gallon kits. The same job in metric: 37 m² × 2 coats ÷ 3.7 m²/L = 20 L, or about 22 L with waste.

- Using the wet-coverage figure from a water- or solvent-based product as if it were dry film — the cured coat is thinner than what you rolled on
- Sizing the whole system off one rate — primer, body coat, and topcoat each have their own coverage figure
- Skipping the waste allowance on freshly ground or porous concrete, where the first coat soaks in fast
- Buying exact volume instead of whole kits — you can’t split an A+B kit and keep the ratio right
- Forgetting that flake and metallic floors still need a clear topcoat on top of the base-coat math

Flip the coverage rate: a product rated 3.7 m² per liter needs about 0.27 L per m² per coat. A 50 m² floor at that rate needs roughly 13.5 L per coat before waste — about 27 L for a two-coat build.
Why does my real usage come out higher than the math?
Porous or rough concrete drinks material, edges and roller trays hold some back, and the first coat almost always yields less than the data-sheet rate. Adding a 10% waste allowance — more on unsealed or heavily ground concrete — is standard practice.
Do primers and topcoats use the same coverage rate?
No. Primers are thinner and stretch much further — often 300 ft² per gallon or more — while high-build body coats sit at the low end of the range. Calculate each product in the system separately with its own rate.
