What is a linear foot?
A linear foot is simply length measured along a line — 12 inches end to end — ignoring width and height. Flooring trades use it for anything sold or priced by the running length: cove base, trim, expansion joint, and crack repair.
Are lineal meters and linear meters the same thing?
Yes — "lineal" and "linear" are two spellings for the same unit. Australian and UK suppliers tend to write lineal meters (lm); North American suppliers write linear feet (lft or LF). Either way it is length along a line.
Why do these two conversions use different factors?
Area scales with the square of length. One meter is 3.281 feet, so one square meter is 3.281 × 3.281 = 10.764 square feet. Using the length factor on an area figure — or vice versa — is one of the most common estimating mistakes.
